Our mission · Status: Foundation

Learning belongs to everyone.

We are building a public-interest home for free educational AI: designed in Africa, useful across languages and devices, and accountable to the people it is meant to serve.

Ability is everywhere. Access is not.

A learner's opportunity should not depend on a subscription, a new device, a fast connection or whether their language is commercially convenient.

Open Leer Foundation exists to explore a different model: educational technology developed for public benefit, with human relationships and local realities at its centre.

Public purpose changes how we build.

These are working commitments. They guide product choices now and will be tested through research, consultation and transparent reporting as the work matures.

Free

Core learning support should be available without a learner-facing fee.

Grounded

Answers should use controlled, relevant knowledge and show their limits.

Safe

Safeguarding, privacy and human oversight belong in the design from the start.

Accessible

Low bandwidth, older hardware, disability and language access are engineering requirements.

Open

We intend to share useful methods, evaluation and selected tools where responsible.

African

The work begins with the languages, curricula, infrastructure and communities around us.

People remain responsible.

Pebble is intended to help people prepare, explain, retrieve and organise. It is not intended to replace teachers, parents, coaches, caregivers or qualified professionals.

We will describe prototypes as prototypes, research as research, and deployed capabilities only when evidence supports the claim.

Build the public-interest layer with us.

We welcome educators, researchers, technologists, funders and community organisations who share the mission and its safeguards.
